The year is 2094. It has been announced that a comet is heading towards the Earth. Most of it will miss our planet, but two pieces will probably hit the southern half of the Earth.
On 17 July, a piece four kilometers wide enters the Earth’satmospherewith a massive explosion. About half of the piece is destroyed, but the remaining part hits the South Atlantic at 200 times the speed of sound. The sea boils and a huge hole is made in the seabed. Huge waves are created and spread outwards from the hole. The wall of water, a kilometer high, rushes towards southern Africa at 800 kilometers an hour. Cities on the African coast are totally destroyed and millions of people are drowned.
Before the waves reach South America, the second piece of the comet lands in Argentina. Earthquakes and volcanoes are set off in the Andes Mountains. The shock waves move north into California and all around the Pacific Ocean. The cities of Los Angeles, San Francisco and Tokyo are completely destroyed by earthquakes. Millions of people in the southern half of the earth are already dead, but the north won’t escape for long. Because of the explosions, the sun is hidden by clouds of dust, and temperatures around the world fall to almost zero. Crops are ruined. The sun won’t be seen again for many years. Wars break out as countries fight for food. A year later, no more than 10 million remain alive.
Could it really happen? In fact, it has already happened more than once in the history of the Earth. Thedinosaurswere on the Earth for over 160 million years. Then 65 million years ago they suddenly disappeared. Many scientists believe that the Earth was hit by a piece of object in space. The dinosaurs couldn’t live through the cold climate that followed and they died out. Will we meet the same end?

Her face is one of the most famous in the world—but lovers of Leonardo Da Vinci’s masterpiece have never known what Mona Lisa sounded like.
The world’s leadingacoustics(声学) expert has used state-of-the-art technology to recreate the voice of the woman with the famously enigmatic smile, some 500 years after her death.
Dr.Matsumi Suzuki—who has previously identified Osama Bin Laden’s voice and solved murders using voice-printing technology—used the woman’s physical features to work out how she would have sounded. He and his team then used voicesynthesizers(合成器) to record a message from her, as well as another from Da Vinci.
Dr.Suzuki, president of the Japan Acoustic Laboratory in Tokyo, made the recordings after studying the Mona Lisa for a month.
Da Vinci worked on the painting between 1503 and 1507. The woman is thought to have been Lisa Gherardini, the wife of a wealthy silk merchant from Florence who was aged 24 when she sat for Da Vinci.
The length of her finger allowed her height to be estimated at about 5 feet 6 inches. Then the researchers worked out the structure of herskull(头骨), the size of her bones and the volume of her nose and throat.
Using a computer programme with a database of more than 150,000 voices, Dr. Suzuki’s team matched her physical characteristics to a voiceprint.
This pattern offrequencies(频率) is described as the measurable elements of a human voice, based on the shape of the speaker’s mouth and throat. A voiceprint is unique to each individual and is used in security systems for voice identification. The computer programme was then able to produce a synthesized voice for Mona Lisa.
“Knowing her bone frame I can make her voice,” said Dr. Suzuki. “We believe we are able to create voices that are very close to the real voices.” In the recording, the Mona Lisa announces in Italian: “I’m Elizabeth, also known as Mona Lisa. I am a lady with a smile, filled with aprofound riddle.”

Having finished her homework, Ma Li wants some music for relaxation. As usual, she starts her computer and goes to baidu.com.cn to download music files. But this time she is surprised when an announcement about protecting songs’ copyright bursts onto the screen.
The age of free music and movie downloads may have come to an end as Web companies like Baidu are accused of infringing copyright. This monthlawsuits(诉讼) have been raised against four websites offering free downloads.
In September, a Beijing court ordered Baidu to pay recording company Shanghai Push for their losses. Baidu was also told to block the links to the pirated music on the website. This caused a heated discussion on Internet file sharing.
“Baidu’s defeat in the lawsuit shows it is not right to get copyrighted songs without paying. Downloaders may face lawsuits of fines,” said an official from the Guangdong Provincial Press and Publication Administration.
Like many teens, Huang Ruoru, an 18-year-old girl from Puning in Guangdong Province, doesn’t think that getting music from websites is wrong. She always shares her favourite songs downloaded from Baidu with her friends. When told about the lawsuit, she began to feel a little sorry about getting others’ work without paying.
But she said that the wish of file sharing was too convenient topass up. “Buying CDs is too expensive for students,” she said. “I don’t know what I will do now. It’s really terrible if my only choices are radio and television.”
However, other teenagers have different ideas. Wang Yafei, a Senior 2 girl from Jinan, Shangdong Province pointed out that file sharing was a good way to promote pop singers. “If I download a song and really like it, I will buy the CD,” she said. “So what the recording companies really should do is improving their music, rather than fighting against file-sharers.”

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao said North Korea should understand it had made a mistake but “punishment should not be the purpose” of any U.N. response. Chinese officials have refused to say publicly what consequences they believe North Korea should face for its claimed nuclear test, although its U.N. ambassador, Wang Guangya, agreed earlier this week that the Security Council must impose “punitive actions”.

Early tomorrow morning, the clocks go back toherald(预报) Greenwich Mean Time—and that extra hour in bed could do your brain a lot of good. According to a review of research on sleep. Psychologists at the University of Rome pulled together more than 100 studies of the effects of sleep and found that staying out of bed for too long can have serious effects on ability to remember and learn new information. For students, they found that a bad night’s sleep could even result in worse grades.
In one study, researchers compared health, behavior, sleep complaints and school performance of normal and poor sleepers. “Twenty-one per cent of poor sleepers failed one or more years at school, while similar problems were observed in just 11% of normal sleepers. Moreover, school achievement difficulties resulted more frequently in poor than in normal sleepers. One of the best predictors for this low school achievement has been identified in children’sfatigue(疲乏) ,“said Professor Curcioa.
A study of 3,000 high school students in 1998 showed that students with higher grades reported more total sleep, earlier bedtimes on school nights and less erratic(不稳定的) sleep patterns at weekends than students with lower grades.
Another study investigated the effects of total sleep deprivation(剥夺) on students in a laboratory. After 18 hours movement and response times slowed; at 34 hours endurance dropped; at 42 hours activity, balance and power were significantly weakened; at 50 hours speed was affected.
“Recent studies have strengthened the idea that sleep may play an important role in learning and memory, although the extent of this role remains hotly debated,” wrote Giuseppe Curcioa in the journalSleep Medicine Reviews.
72. What result might the students’ bad night’s sleep lead to?
A. Good grades.B. Good health.C. Bad eyesight.D. Bad grades.
73.Which statement is true according to the passage?
A.Poor sleepers have the same conditions in school performance as the normal sleepers.
B.The number of the poor sleepers who failed one or more years at school is nearly double the number of the normal ones.
C.The number of the normal sleepers who failed one or more years at school is nearly double the number of the poor ones.
D.School achievement difficulties resulted more frequently in normal than in poor sleepers.
74. Which fact hasn’t been found in the students with higher grades?
A. Earlier bedtimes on school nights.B. Less unstable sleep patterns at weekends.
C. More total sleep.D. More bad and broken sleep.
75. Do you think what advice the experts might give us students?
A.The advice from the experts might be “Stay in bed for that extra hour”
B.The advice from the experts might be “Get up one hour earlier than before”.
C.The advice from the experts might be “Go to bed one hour later than before”.
D.The advice from the experts might be “Sleep the whole day on Sunday”.

One Possible Version:
Good morning everyone,
Today I will say something about a national students’ sports program.
The national students sports program started from 10am.to 11am.on the 29th,April,2007.On that day ,there were millions of students who took part in the program at the same time all over the country .And it was said that there were 11 million students of Jiangsu Province.
The Ministry of Education cares about this program and our health conditions. It suggests our students insist on taking exercise for an hour every day. If we keep its suggestion in mind and take it into practice constantly ,we will work healthily for 50 years and live a happy life.
Therefore I agree with the suggestion ,wishing that students of Senior Three should spend an hour exercising every day. I think it is beneficial for our teenagers to strengthen our bodies. only when we have good bodies can we study better and make greater progress.
Do you agree with me?
