Step I Lead-in and Pre-reading  

1.First check the answers of the exercises on page 56.  

Check the answers with the whole class.  

T: OK. With the pocket money, you can buy things you are interested in. What things do you like to spend money on? Discuss the words in exercise 2 on page 12 with your partner. Make a dialogue and talk about how to spend your pocket money.  

2.Then, give the students several minutes to discuss. When they are discussing, walk around the classroom. Make sure every student is active in discussing.   

Step II Fast-reading  

Get the students to learn the text on page 12.   

T: From what you said, I can see all of you get a lot of pocket money. And nearly all of you use the money to buy something you like. How can we spend money meaningfully? Maybe we can find an answer in our text. The title is “When less is more”. This is a newspaper article. Now, I will give you several minutes to do fast reading and then try to finish exercise 3.   

Show the eight statements in exercise 3 on the screen   

The students will skim the text and prepare for the answers.  

Step III Careful-reading  

1.T: So far, we have got to know about this article. Now, take a look at the title. Think about it again, and can you tell us the meaning of this title?  

S: It means you should spend the money right, even if it’s only five yuan.  

S: Little money can also do something great.  

S: Try to make more out of something less.   

T: Yes, all of you are right. Sometimes, we think we have too little power to do something great, but in fact, we can do something meaningful with our little power, only if we have a kind, gentle heart toward other people, toward the whole world. Now let’s get to learn some details of the article. Read the text again carefully. Think about the following five questions. When you finish your reading, I will check your answers.   

2.Show the students the following questions of EX.4 on the screen:  

1). Which river is being talked about in the article?  

2). In which area has soil erosion almost destroyed farming land?  

3). What can people do to help to stop soil erosion?  

4). Why does the writer say 5 yuan is important?   

5). Which example is given to show that 5 yuan can help to develop the local economy?   

The students will begin to read the text carefully and think over the questions. A few minutes later,check the answers one by one.  

T: I think you have got a better understanding of our text. So now let’s have a deeper thought about our text. Summarize what we have learned.  

3.Ask the students to match the main idea of each paragraph.  

 Para   1   a . A success of a tree-planting programme in  Inner Mongolia .  

 Para  2   b.You can use 5 yuan to buy a   tree and create a green future.  

Para  3 c .Everybody plays an important   role in stopping  Yellow River  erosion.  

Para 4   d.It is a huge job to control  Yellow River  erosion.  

Para 5  e.The removal of sand is the main cause of  Yellow River  erosion  

Step IV Post-reading and Word study  

1.Then give the students some time to finish Ex.6 . Some time later, check the answers. If possible, ask the students to translate the sentences into Chinese. The reference answers here as the following:   

1. Approximately 10,000 people took part in the tree-planting exercise.  

大约一万人参加了植树活动。  

2. Many farming areas in   Shanxi   Province   are affected by soil erosion.   

在山西省,很多农田受到土地侵蚀。  

3. Farmers know the importance of stopping erosion.   

农民们知道阻止土地侵蚀的重要性。
