suggest在课文中出现了两次，分别有不同的含义，请看课文中的两个句子：　　

1. New research into EQ suggests that success is not simply the result of a high IQ. 　　

2. Supported by his academic research, Professor Salovey suggests that when predicting someone’s future success ...　　

    根据第一句话的语境我们可以猜测出suggest在句中是“表明”的意思，后可接名词或that从句（从句谓语用陈述语气）。　　

    在第二句话中，suggest后面接了一个宾语从句，从句的内容是Professor Salovey的一些看法，所以suggest在此处的意思为“认为，提出看法”，后可接名词或that从句（从句谓语用陈述语气）。如：　　

    His attitude suggests that he isn’t really interested in this movie.　　

    他的态度表明他对这部电影并不真正感兴趣。　　

    I suggest that he was worthy of help from you. 我认为他应该得到你的帮助。

matter　　

    matter在本课中作不及物动词，意为“重要，有重大关系”，可用于句型：　　

⑴ matter to sb.  　　

⑵ It matters (to sb.) + wh-/ if 从句。　　

[例句] It doesn’t matter much whether he will come or not. 　　

不管他来还是不来都没有多大的关系。　　

It matters little to me what he says about me. 　　

他说什么我都不在乎。　　

The children matter more to her than anything else in the world.　　

对于她来说，在这个世界上没有比孩子更重要的了。　　

    matter作名词时可意为“事情，问题；事态（matters）；重要性”。

characteristic　　

characteristic当名词讲时是可数名词， 常用复数形式characteristics，意为“特点；特征；品质” ，常跟of 连用。　　

[例句] Her most attractive characteristic is honesty. 　　

她最吸引人的特点是诚实。　　

One of the characteristics of Beijing Opera is that it is highly symbolic. 　　

京剧的一个特点是高度象征。　　

    characteristic也可以作形容词，意思是“典型的，独特的，特有的”。　　

[例句] She spoke with characteristic enthusiasm. 　　

她说话带着特有的热情。
