Family Vs Technology
Modern technology certainly changes family behavior, but does it really damage family life as many people fear? Not necessarily, says Dr. Silva, a professor in Sociology(社会学) at the Open University, she also argues it is wrong to assume technology erodes(腐蚀,侵蚀) the quality of family life.
"There is the idea that technology has an influence on the family and the family suffers. My take is quite different," she explains. "Technological change happens because people's lives change. The imagination is important in driving the things technologists want to find for our daily lives. People desire to see nature as it is, so color television comes about," she says.
In another case, the increase in working mothers helped create a market for labor-saving kitchen equipment. "The time that women have to shop every day for food is no longer available so there is a need to have a refrigerator for food storage," says Dr. Silva. "The need to cook that food more easily and quickly, means you have developments in cooking technology like the microwave oven (微波炉). The microwave oven already existed because it was developed for the navy during World War Two but it wasn't used in ordinary families until the early 1980s.
"Technologies for housework were as important as those for work itself," she says, "So washing machines, refrigerators and microwave ovens are terribly important. We couldn't imagine what life would be like if we didn't have them. "Technological changes in the kitchen have played an important role in the changes of family behavior, creating a new social focus in the home.
"With advanced technology, you can feed the family in an easier manner. People can do housework with less difficulty. But that doesn't mean that family practices are not important — it's just a different way of doing things."

At 23, my career got going. I was midway through a master’s degree at The London School of Economics and Political Science and had been hired as a part-time reporter for a finance website. I got a great one-month review and my boss asked if I was interested in staying with the company after graduation.
However, balancing graduate studies with work was challenging. To deal with it, I checked my real self at my office door. I came in to work, greeted my colleagues and listened more than I contributed in each morning meeting. The small team I worked with often seemed busy, so rather than giving ideas that might get turned down, I stayed back.
After four months, my boss called me into his office. The meeting was going well until he told me that despite the great work I had produced, the team had held a meeting and decided, “We don’t think it’s the right fit.”
I must have looked confused. “You’re ambitious, intelligent and will be very successful,” my boss said. “But you haven’t made enough of an effort to join the team. You lost the enthusiasm you showed in your interview. That won’t work long term.” I couldn’t believe that performing well at my job wasn’t enough to keep it. But I knew my boss was right.
“Don’t leave before you leave.” Because we work so hard for success, we don’t like to think that we hurt ourselves sometimes. But each of us must change when necessary. In trying to earn a full time job, I “leaned back” in order not to show too much of myself or my lack of expertise. I learned the hard way isn’t the way to achieve your goals.

Parents will do anything for their children. Whether it would be the food, clothes, or the place they live in. Parents will always make sure their children have the best of everything. One of the biggest concern that parents currently have is educating their children. They are faced with lots of difficulties when it comes to education for their young ones. Choices include private school, charter school, public school or home schooling.
Fortunately for parents, there are a variety of different strategies that they can take in order to increase their child’s overall intelligence. According to Ross A. Thompson, PhD, professor of psychology at the University of California at Davis, a child’s brain will actually reach 90% of its full size by the time they start kindergarten.
Researchers at Northwestern University in Chicago concluded that playing a musical instrument directly affected the brain stem, the lower section of the brain. Moreover, children that learn an instrument at an early age tend to continue it when they are older. And numerous studies show that a well balanced meal is essential for a child’s mental as well as physical health. Some other researchers recommended that a second language should be taught when children are in preschool. They state that three to four years of age is the perfect time and that any age under four would work perfectly fine for a child's brain development.
The average child will learn how to read between kindergarten and second grade. Many parents can give their children a jump start by teaching them to read before they start school. Children could have anadequate background of the alphabet and sounds of words. before attending school. This can be done by simply reading to them whenever you want The more comfortable they get,the easier the process will be.

W: Lucky.

W: That’s unbelievable!
M: I know. Then a few years later, Frane was in a bus accident. There was heavy rain and the bus lost control on the wet road and crashed into a river. He survived, although 20 people drowned. Then Frane was in a car that caught fire while he was driving it on the motorway. He managed to get out with seconds to spare before the fuel tank exploded.
W: I don’t know whether he’s unlucky or extremely lucky, but I don’t think I ever want to travel with this guy.

W: About two years ago I went with my class on our first school trip — five days in Paris! There were about thirty of us and four teachers. We all went in one big coach from our school in London. The teachers told us to be at school at four thirty in the morning. Everyone was there on time, but the coach didn’t arrive until five o’clock and we didn’t leave until five thirty! We were very cold and tired.
Anyway, the coach was very comfortable and we watched a DVD and listened to some music on the journey. We had some sandwiches and drinks with us, so we went straight to Paris without stopping. The hotel was very old, but our room was nice and the bed was great! I shared the room with three other girls.
When we went shopping I tried to practice my French a few times but sometimes I didn’t know the right words and spoke in English instead! The shops were great — I bought lots of presents, such as a dress for my mother, a bag for my dad and a T-shirt for my little sister!
I think what I enjoyed most was the boat trip. I took lots of photos of my friends and the wonderful art galleries. I was sad to leave Paris. I had a lovely time there.
