Lesson 7 Laozi

I. Greeting

Good afternoon, boys and girls.

First of all, I would like to welcome another 5 students to make their self-introduction.

 

II. City locations.

1) Now look here. Can you guess what it is. Yes, it is a nose. If you could touch the nose, you would live up to 120 years old. Wow, that is amazing, right? But we know it is just a legend. What are these? They are eyes. If you could touch the eyes, you would live up to 160 years old. Are you interested in it? Finally, what are these? They are ears. If you could rub the ears, you could live up to 80 years. That is not long enough now. Whose face it is? Yes, it is Laozi. Yes, today we are going to talk about Taoism. Laozi is the founder of the Taoism. Where is the big stone statue? It is at the foot of the Qingyuan Mountain. When did he live in the world? From 571 BC to 471 BC. He really led a long long life at his time, during the Spring and Autumn Period. But the stone statue was carved in the Song Dynasty. It is the earliest and biggest stone sculpture of Taoism in China. His English name is Laozi, Lao Zi, Lao Tzu, Lao Tse, or Lao Tze.

2) Now we are going to learn some of his famous sayings. The Tao that can be expressed is not the eternal Tao;The name that can be defined is not the unchanging name. Discuss and translate. 道可道，非常道；名可名，非常名. It is the first sentence from the book Tao De Jing by Laozi. Maybe that sentence is too difficult. Let’s learn an easier one. A journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step. 千里之行始于足下.The best of men is like water.上善若水

3) A good runner leaves no track; a good speech leaves no flaws for attack; a good reckoner makes use of no tallies; a well-shut door makes use of no bolts, and nobody can open it; a good well-tied knot makes use of no rope, and nobody can unloose it.

　In the same way the sage is always skilful at finding good qualities of people and worthiness of things. So there are no rejected people and things. The reason why the sage can do that is that he understands the wisdom of ‘Tao’ clearly.

So the talented person could teach the every man, the every man could offer assistant and warning example for the talented person. It is very important principle.

III.  City Game. 

I hide the Chinese translation notes in different places of the classroom. So the students can look for them and if they are lucky enough to find some, they can answer the questions and get one point for one sentence.
